The battle of appomattox
The Battle of Appomattox was the closest official end of the Civil War recorded. Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant were the two commanding generals for the Confederate and Union armies. When Robert E. Lee surrendered, it was clear that the Confederates did not have a chance against the large Union army, though some southern rebels attempted to keep the war going by continuing the fight.
By the end of the battle, 260 union soldiers were estimated to be dead, and 440 confederate soldiers .were estimated to be dead. Around 27,000 Confederate soldiers surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, but were allowed to return to their homes without punishment.
Ulysses S. Grant was surprisingly merciful to the Confederate soldiers. He did not take them as prisoners, but instead he let them return to their homes. When his soldier began to celebrate their victory, Grant stopped them saying, “The war is over. The Rebels are our countrymen again.”
